Deep Blue Sea Tutorial Update

Back in 2014 I wrote a tutorial for my Deep Blue Sea Quilt baby quilt. The link to the template download has periodically stopped working and I have had to update it every year or so. In order to save myself some time in the future, I moved the tutorial into a PDF and added it to my shop (for free) along with the templates. 

The PDF contains the photos and text from the original 2014 blog post, but I have added fabric requirements and put them (along with the cutting instructions) into a table so they are a little easier to read. I also corrected a couple of typos. The templates download as a separate PDF file and I have added a 1" square to them to help you make sure that they have printed the correct size.

The August Quilt - Pink and Purple Version

It is probably indicative of when I grew up (late 80s/early 90s) but I am a huge fan of pink and purple together.

Blame it on all of those Lisa Frank stickers I had as a kid, but this combo still really gets me. After I made my rainbow version of the August Quilt, I knew I needed to make another. This time I wanted to re-use some of the colors and use a tighter range of shades.

New Pattern - The August Quilt!

This quilt began as a baby shower gift for a friend, but I knew that I wanted to make it into a pattern. There are SO MANY possibilities for this one (which you can check out when I post my pattern testers' quilts later this week) and I can't wait to see what YOU make with it.

Overcast Baby Quilt

Let me introduce you to the Overcast Baby Quilt! I was originally going to call this post "Cloudy Day Baby Quilt," but then I remembered that I already had a post with that name. Oops!

A few weeks ago I received an email invitation for a virtual baby shower. My very best friend from high school, Cynthia, is having her first baby; she lives in Pennsylvania and has lived all over the world and the US and wanted all of her friends to be able to attend via Skype.

Sunshowers Mini Quilt

A while back I signed on to do a quick mini quilt pattern test for Megan and her new Sunshowers Quilt Pattern. I was interested in doing this because I enjoy pattern testing, but also because my daughter has always loved rainbows and I thought this mini quilt would be perfect for her wall.

Originally I was going to follow the pattern as written, but then I found this stack of Anna Maria Horner scraps that were just the right size.

The Harper Quilt - New PDF Pattern

I am excited to introduce a new pattern today! When I originally made this quilt for my daughter, I wasn't sure if people would be interested in a quilt that involves curves so I was on the fence about writing a pattern. But after a few requests, I decided to go for it.

The pattern is now available on Craftsy and Etsy.

In addition to the 60" x 72" lap size, there are also instructions to make a 36" x 48" baby size version. Here are a few things that I think are great about this pattern:

• In addition to having instructions to make the larger polka dots (like I did in my quilt), there are also instructions to make small polka dots!
• This pattern is a great introduction into sewing curves if you are trying them out for the first time - the curves are not too severe and once you are done sewing the curve, you are done with the block so the quilt is actually pretty quick!
• The pattern works well with scraps or yardage and the instructions allow you to choose however many different fabrics you want to use in your quilt.
• The PDF download includes coloring sheets to help you plan your quilt.

My daughter has been asking for a new quilt to add to her bed during the winter. She has plenty of quilts, but can you really have too many quilts?

Sewing with Curves Week 2 Project 3

I am not going to say that this is my favorite thing I have ever made (I think that it could have been awesome, I just wish I had made a few different choices.

Here is what I would have done differently:

• My least favorite thing is the star.  I had trouble getting my teeny, tiny yellow triangles to square up.  I wish I had used bigger triangles to make my wonky points so that I didn't have such tiny little sun rays.
• I wish I had used lighter background colors.  That dark gray square was just sitting next to my sewing machine and so I threw it in.  
• I wish I had used all dark green fabrics for my tree.  I wish there was more contrast there.

That being said, it is still pretty cute and I am glad I made it.  I am so looking forward to making the scallop quilt next week!

More Sewing with Curves

I am still working on the Curves Class.  This week I made a couple of cards.  I have never been a card-marker, or really a fan of cards in general, but these were a fun quick project.

Sewing with Curves Projects

I have recently started taking the Curves Class from Rachel at Stitched in Color. I was able to pretty much complete all of the projects (I couldn't find a snap for my baby bib).  The first project was a curved bunting. I used a variety of boy-ish prints to hang it in my son's room - a couple of them are from Sarah Jane's Children at Play Line which is wonderful. Sewing with curves isn't so bad ;)
