improv boy quilt

A few weeks ago I decided to make quilts for my nieces and nephews when they turn 8 years old (this is the age in our church when kids are baptized).  Hopefully the mother's of my niece (who will be turning 8 in the next week and who will be receiving the granny square quilt in my last post) and my nephew (who turned 8 a few months ago) don't read this blog or these won't be much of a surprise ;)

Then I started to think . . . what kind of quilt do you make for an 8 year old boy?  I have no idea, but this is what I came up with:

I was also a little concerned about what size to make the quilt.  I didn't want to make them small like a baby quilt, but I didn't want to make a giant quilt either (mostly because of time constraints).  Both this quilt and the granny square quilt finished up around 42" x 52".  Hopefully that will make a nice lap size quilt for them.

This was my first attempt at improv blocks and it was really fun!  I backed the quilt in this Curious Nature print which is so soft.
I don't have too terribly many nieces and nephews, but it occurred to me today that next year I will have 2 nieces and a nephew that will turn 8 on the SAME DAY.  I guess I will have a lot of sewing to do between now and then :)

  1. I think you did just perfect. My boys are 8 and 10 and this quilt you made looks totally like something I might make for them. I'd love to try this kind of improv log cabin look some day.

  3. I LOVE that quilt! Boy quilts have been on my mind lately, too. Boys are so much harder than girls!

  4. You did such a fabulous job! I love improv quilts and this one is superb. Those red accets here and there are great! I have promised to make quilts for all my nieces and nephews too. I've got 3 down and 8 to go!
