The inspiration for this quilt came from Lu Summer's book Scrap Improv. I know I have mentioned my love for this book several times, but it is really a beautiful book. Improv-iness doesn't come naturally to me and this really made me excited about trying out some new things.
The background fabric came from yardage in my stash and is gray Robert Kaufman chambray. The rest of the fabric came from scraps. I quilted with an allover concentric swirl pattern. This is one of my favorite quilting designs but it is definitely one that does not come naturally to me and I have been working hard to improve my swirls. Things went pretty well on this one but I still have plenty of room for improvement.
And the binding is one of Juliana Horner's prints from Joann's. I actually chose this fabric first before I knew what I was going to make and worked backwards. I love the print and I think it makes a fun binding. I like it so much that I thought it deserved its very own closeup photo.
The backing is Ann Kelle's Remix Flannel.
This quilt did put a nice little dent in the scrap bin, but they seem to be multiplying. Good thing I have 2 more sisters who want quilts :)
Finished size: 60"x72"
Batting: Quilter's Dream Cotton Select
Backing: Remix Flannel
You will have people 'pretending' to be your sister when they this beautiful quilt! I think we all overestimate how many scraps it takes to make a quilt! I bet you haven't made much of a dent in your stash!
ReplyDeleteAnother stunner...looks to me like you do improv very well!
ReplyDeleteI love the chambray background - it's really beautiful and I think your quilting is fab. I'm still on straight lines myself!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's just gorgeous. I really like the X design and the colours you've chosen suit it perfectly (who would've thought they'd come from your scraps). Great to know that your sister will cosy up with it as I imagine it will be a hard one to let go of!....
ReplyDeleteThis is great! How big are the bulk of your x's? This is kind of where I'm headed with my cross-stitch blocks. Very fun. And I like your choice for a backing as well as the binding!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! My three siblings had to wait quite a while to get a quilt from me--but worth the wait, and well loved!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the binding fabric too, and beautiful fabric always deserves its own closeup, even if it's only the binding! I'm sure scraps multiply when we're not looking, just like the dirty laundry.
ReplyDeleteIt is AMAZING Erica! Love the variety in the blocks with the different sizes and different background fabrics. Your quilting is great too.
ReplyDeleteI really love your use of scraps. I also bought Lu's book in hopes that improv will come a little easier.
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! Love everything about it
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this quilt!!
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about scraps and their miraculous ability to procreate in the bin? My current scrap quilt (the green postage stamps) is the first one that I feel has made a good dent in my scraps in a long time. Maybe because there are no background fabrics and I let it grow willy nilly big?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, good job and nice improv style. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with scraps next!
Congratulations on the finish. What a generous thing to do for your sisters.
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful quilt, Erica. Love, love, love !!!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt! I do not find those swirls easy either. Yours look fantastic. I just don't have time to practice, and then when I want to do them on an actual quilt I don't because I don't want to unpick dodgy quilting! How many sisters and brothers do you have? You must be from a large family!
