I have written up a quick tutorial for making this quilt in baby and quilt size, it is available here. Happy quilting!
A friend of mine is expecting her first baby and she was not exactly thrilled when she found out that it was going to be a boy. Since I find baby boy quilts a little difficult and this friend has a very strong personal style, I was a little worried about making her a quilt. I wanted to make something that would help her be a little more excited about having a boy since baby boys are just the sweetest.
Her style is very minimalist and involves a lot of white. Originally I was planning on doing an entire quilt of half square triangles made with solid fabrics. Once I started to cut fabrics I thought that I could probably make it a little more minimal, so I threw in a bunch of white and a few simple prints.
I was trying for muted blues, grays, and blacks and I wanted to distribute them to look random. But it turns out that creating a "random" look is much more difficult than it should be. Seriously, this layout took forever and I'd go back and change a few things if I could. Who knew that random took so much planning?
The backing is an amazing Bark and Branch print. I was a little sad to use this one up, but it was the right fabric for this quilt. I may need to buy more.
I gifted this at a baby shower last week (after finishing at the last minute!) and she seemed to really like it. Gifting baby quilts is the best.
Finished size: 40" x 50"
Man...you churn these darling baby quilts out fast!!! I have one awaiting attention as soon as I get a quilt bound.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to your thoughts on white in baby quilts. I have an idea for pattern but it would be mostly white (or a light neutral) and am afraid it wouldn't get used because they'd be worried about getting it dirty. :/
This is really nice and it does look random. I know what you mean about having to "plan random" though. I also wonder about large amounts of white in a baby quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love how your baby quilt turned out. I agree putting together a random patterned quilt design can be difficult at times. Your randomness works in the end. I use alot of white in my baby quilts. They are meant to be loved and washed. I need to make a baby boy quilt so this inspires me. We love little boys, in our family we have 5 under the age 7 or the last 7 kids all boys under 16. We need some girls. lol Thanks for sharing your quilt finish.
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous! Love the colour palette and the shapes created by the not so random layout!
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful quilt I'm sure your friend will absolutely adore her precious little boy, and with you beautiful quilt he has a wonderful cosy bed. Quilty hugs
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt for a little boy. And yes, random takes forever ;-)
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet quilt! I hope she likes it!
ReplyDeleteI love it. And given your description, I am sure your friend loves it too.
ReplyDeleteIt's stunning and I love the dark binding.
ReplyDeleteThat backing is perfect. Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh it looks great! I know what you mean about creating a "random" pattern. I always end up wanting to change something after it's finished.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt. You defintiely achieved a great random design, well worth the time it takes to do such a thing. I love how the binding really frames the design. I do agree that baby boys are the cutest - but then with two little boys of my own I'm totally biased! I think that most quilt patterns will work for boys as long as you can pick the right colours/fabrics which you have most definitely done here.
ReplyDeleteI really like it! My approach to random is to mix things up until I feel uncomfortable about them LOL!
ReplyDeleteHow could she not love it, I do!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt. Your work to make it random really paid off.
ReplyDeleteThis is great and I'm fine with every detail!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great quilt and the backing is perfect too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely quilt! It is random enough, if you overthink it too much it will loose the randomness. They are great colours for a baby boy quilt, and you're right: baby boys are wonderful (I had three)!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful, and I hope it did the trick to create more joy for the boy...
ReplyDeleteI'd have a hard time parting with that backing fabric too but I totally agree that it was the perfect backing for that gorgeous quilt!
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of sounding like I am just repeating the previous comments....this is a gorgeous baby quilt. Your friend is very, very lucky to know you! I hope, too, that it helps her feel happier about a boy on the way. All babies are just SO wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is beautiful. So simple in design, but wonderfully creative in fabric selection. Just the right touch of color for a perfect baby boy quilt. I hope the mom-to-be appreciates it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful baby boy quilt. Congrats on a great job!
ReplyDeleteI love the colour palette and it is quite minimalist. I hope your friend loves it. I never found out what I was having with all three pregnancies because I didn't want to feel disappointed and have people pick up on that. I have a daughter and two sons. Little boys are so sweet and less complicated than little girls, I have to say. I hope your friend has come around to the idea of a boy now!
ReplyDeletedo you have a pattern for this
