some advice?

I haven't been able to sew as much as I like lately.  I did get caught up on December and January do. Good Stitches blocks.
do. Good Stitches Wish Circle January blocks
goldfish block
And I have started cutting a few things for a project for the baby.

But over the past couple weeks I have been excessively tired and have been having headaches and more nausea.  It feels like the first trimester all over again.  Then a couple of days ago it occurred to me that I might have gestational diabetes.

So I went in yesterday for my 1 hour glucose test and sure enough I failed.  I get to spend 4 hours at the doctor's office on Thursday for the extended test, but I have pretty much already resolved that I have it.  I can't think of another reason why chocolate would make me feel sick instead of happy.

Do any of you have a not-too-difficult low carb, high protein recipe that you love? I would really appreciate any tips or suggestions if you have them!  Hopefully regulating my blood sugar will help me feel a little better and a little more inspired to do some sewing.

  1. So sorry to hear it. I went through the same thing. I ate a lot of spaghetti squash (oftentimes as a casserole layered with pasta sauce, cottage cheese, and topped with cheddar then baked) or FoldIt 5-Grain Flax bread sandwiches with a fried egg, pepper jack cheese, turkey sausage, and fresh spinach. Soft tacos also worked well when I included extra veggies like cooked carrots or bell peppers. I also highly recommend Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Raspberry bars if you're a chocolate lover. You can do it!

  2. Ugh that is rough! I have been doing the Whole30 this month and have a pinterest board for recipes that are low carb (except for potatoes) and high protein: https://www.pinterest.com/lostaspen/whole30/ Hope you feel better with a diet change! I can't believe how much better I feel on the Whole30 diet! Especially how much LESS tired I am, it is awesome.

  4. I'm sorry! i hope some diet changes help you feel better quickly. Here's a link for Spinach Pie.....it's a hit in my house, even my four year old & two year old goggle it up. I usually make two at a time and freeze the second one for later. Take care! http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/03/easy-crust-less-spinach-and-feta-pie.html

  6. Ohhh. :( I don't have any specific recipes to off, but Kalyn's Kitchen has tons of South Beach diet recipes, and that's pretty similar. Also, recently the husband and I started swapping out pasta for green beans, and it's better in almost everything. Chicken marsala and chicken cacciatore are our big ones. Chicken piccata and shrimp scampi were pretty good with green beans instead of pasta too. But we just might have a serious green bean addiction. :) Hope you get some good recipes/advice here and you feel better soon!!!

  7. Truly embrace anything with a low glycemic count. Add fiber it off sets the glucose load somewhat and eat plenty of vegetables. Also only eat fruit if it's a berry form. Anything like melons, pineapple, bananas are a big no no and have too much sugar to handle. If wanting a smidgen of chocolate then have 5 chocolate chips from a Nestle bag. Satisfies that need without the overload.

Typically anything white like pasta, potatoes, rice should be very limited too. I make do with faux cauliflower recipes for mashed potatoes, rice and vegetables are good to substitute for the pasta. Good luck and bless you both.

  8. We eat lots of grilled/roasted proteins (chicken thighs are my favorite because even if you over cook them a little bit they don't dry out.) with roasted veggies. Broccoli and Cauliflower or broccoli and carrots, or just one veggie. I have a stone bar pan from pampered chef that is amazing but before that I just made them on a foil lined cookie sheet for easy clean up. Make sure your oven in good and hot 375-400 so they take just 20ish minutes and get crispy on the edges. Hope you're feeling better soon!

  10. I had GD with my first pregnancy. The carbs are still totally necessary and surprisingly in decent quantities. It's about portion size for each item you consume. I'm happy to talk more about it with you if you want. I had to take classes from a nutritionist. Just shoot me an email. I know how much of a bummer having GD is, and thinking about food (how much, carb count, can be overwhelming.). Hang in there!

  11. Oh man, what a bummer! I can't help you with a recipe but your blocks look nice! I hope you start to feel better soon. When is your baby due? I'm in my 2nd trimester and will be having a c-section around 6/19.

  12. I have had GD with my first 2 and I am pregnant with my third- my GD test is tomorrow and I know I will fail. One thing that always got me through this has been diced chicken, cucumber pieces, grape tomatoes (halved), with a bit of Kent's Greek dressing. Tacos with low carb tortillas, chili, and recipes from diabetic cookbooks were helpful too. It's tough- but doable. I had insulin with my second and it made the baby MUCH smaller (7.11, as opposed to 9.5).

  13. SO sorry you are feeling so crappy! I had GD with my second child and it was no fun. But, it Did go away right after the birth, so maybe you'll be lucky with that too. No good recipes, but I remember it helped a Lot to eat little and often of the foods (they gave me the Diabetic diet to eat. Plain oatmeal with green melon was a lifesaver for a few weeks :) And so was plain cheeseburger with lots of lettuce and Ken's or Newman's Own dressing. Also, cut your walks down to half an hour to help prevent crashing. Feel better!

  14. Oh! So sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. I don't have any ideas for food, but sending happy and healthy thoughts your way!

  15. Have you heard of Trim Healthy Mama? I have heard it is a great diet that helps regulate the blood sugar and low carb. You can find them on FB and Google them, there are a lot of people who share a lot of recipes for them. Lots of testimonies of people being pregnant while doing it also.

  16. So sorry to hear you've been feeling so awful. We're very much carb-lovers in our house, so I don't have any recipe suggestions for you. I hope you feel better with some menu changes.

  17. Love the blocks, but I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well! I muscled through two pregnancies as a type 1 diabetic (which is a bit different). But it's all doable - you can do it! I hope you're feeling better soon.

My one tip - watch the carbs/sugars in sauces and dressings. They are often hidden (tomato sauce, for instance, often has a lot).

  18. We love homemade lentil soup.

Sautee an onion and some garlic, in a largish skillet with high sides, and then add a can of diced tomatoes. Simmer for a bit. Toss in a bag of baby spinach, and cook until it wilts. Then make some wells in the mixture with a back of a spoon, and drop some eggs in to poach. Easy and yummy!

  19. I was borderline diabetic when I was pregnant and what helped me the most was to start the day with a green smoothie full of veggies (yep and i hated the look of them but they are good). That way I was full and had greens as well. I also ate small portions of food every 3-4 hours. Spaghetti Squash was a big hit or lettuce boats filled with meat or fish and veggies. Buckwheat Noodles instead of regular pasta, quinoa instead of rice etc. I was still able to snack on a little bit of chocolate every once in a while to keep me sane! Hang in there!!

  20. i had GDM with my last two pregnancies. not fun, but if you follow the dietary outlines, it's manageable. i actually didn't use any special recipes, i just kept track of my carb count and i was fine that way. it's mostly about portion control and timing. you can still eat pretty much anything, but how much and when is more the concern. that said, if you add more veges in, it's a lot easier to do. good luck! you can do it. like i used to tell myself, it's not fatal or permanent. =) the upside is you actually come out of the pregnancy with a lot less weight because of the way you're eating! i had more than one mom tell me they were kinda hoping to have it again with the next pregnancy just because it forced them to eat better and be in better shape. somehow we can do it for the baby but not for ourselves, right?
