Half Rectangle Triangle Quilt

A few weeks ago I started spending some time with a women from our church congregation who is expecting her first child.  She has dealt with depression and anxiety in the past and is spending time with various people to help manage her issues while she is pregnant.  I thought it would be a fun project to work on a quilt each time she visited.

We talked about colors and fabrics and picking a design that would have lots of contrast and ended up with a bright, scrappy combo which included lots of Ann Kelle prints.  Her baby shower is tomorrow, and her baby boy is due to be born in about a month, so I spent some time this weekend finishing up the quilt.

I decided to go with half rectangle triangles for the quilt which is something I have wanted to try since seeing Rita's quilt.  There are a couple of tutorials out there on how to make HRTs, but it is a little more complicated and annoying than I was willing to deal with so I went ahead and bought this ruler.  It is not cheap, and it was difficult to find, but it was easy and worth it to me since I intend to make more of these in the future.

The backing and the binding of the quilt are also Ann Kelle.  I love that bias stripe, it's the second time I have used this print as a binding.

And just for fun, a picture of this happy guy.  He is the sweetest!

  4. Awwwwww Your little fella is sooo cute.
My daughter's little girl is 5 months, she does not stay entertained long but she does like being carried every where hahaha.
This quilt is gorgeous, and so happy
I think I will put an idea like this with all of my left overs, I have way too many.
You are doing such a great thing to support this new mama. Everyone gets weak, then there are those that really suffer. I hope she improves, sometimes growing just a little more helps.
My daughter also suffers from anxiety.
It can be a struggle, but life always teaches us new things
Of course I will be praying for your church friend.

  7. Great fun quilt. I needed some inspiration for something other than the pink floral quilts I seem to be repeatedly turning out. Also agree that the bloc loc rulers are worth it. I made a rectangle quilt before I had the ruler and it was only luck that some blocks ended up diamonds or rectangles - straight seams, scant 1/4 seams and measuring are not my strong suits. The bloc loc rulers are the only reason my flying geese measure out. Next on my wish list is one of the bigger HST rulers: 8.5, 9.5 or 12.5.

  8. What a beautiful quilt! And what a beautiful story behind it. I will pray for both you and your friend! Having had similar struggles myself in the past, it is an incredible thing to be able to share and have someone walk alongside you. God bless!

  10. What a fun quilt for a little one. I'm sure your time with this young mother has been very helpful to her. A prayer that she doesn't suffer with postpartum depression.

Your little guy is just adorable. He has such a beautiful, happy smile.
