Intertwined Quilt and Giveaway- RJR Cotton Supreme Solids

I have recently had the opportunity to work on a project for RJR Fabrics for the second time (first time here); this time I primarily used Cotton Supreme Solids with Cotton + Steel's Lucky Strikes collection mixed in.

Did you know that RJR manufactures Cotton + Steel?  That means that their solids match perfectly.  And they are lovely and soft and vibrant.  I used a color scheme for the solids that was inspired by Lucky Strikes and then mixed in a few of the prints.

Originally I was planning to use on point squares for the quilt, but decided to try something a little different.  Can you see the shape?  It's a half hourglass/half HST block (does this have a name?) and involved a little bit of trimming but I thought it was a fun way to make the quilt.

I quilted 4 diagonal lines, 1 inch apart along each of the stripes.  You might be wondering if that is enough quilting, and it isn't.  I am going to do some hand quilting in each of the squares which will take me quite a while so I decided to go ahead and share.  It will be a good project to work on during the holidays and you will probably be seeing this quilt again when the hand quilting is finished.

For the backing I used this gorgeous Lucky Strikes print.  It is amazing and the pink colorway is just as good.

The binding is a navy RJR Cotton Supreme Solids solid.  While I was working on hand sewing the binding I started to wonder: am I the slowest hand sewer ever? Maybe.  One thing that has helped me though is using thread conditioner (I use this one) to keep thread from getting tangled and knotted.  How did I not know about this before?  But even with that help I am still slow

GIVEAWAY: To enter a fat quarter bundle of the solids I used in this quilt, please leave me a comment below!  I will pick a winner on Sunday November 15th.

Finished size: 63" x 70"

  1. I used to have terrible tangling. But someone informed me a couple of years ago that thread has a right and wrong direction -- I didn't know! I realized that my routine for threading a hand sewing needle was making my thread backward, every time! When I fixed that I had no more tangling. It was nutty.

  3. This is a great quilt and I love the pattern!
I just looked and it seems that it is called
    "3-patch Quarter Square Triangle".
It also has another name, I saw it in some of my
magazines once, but it would take some time
    to look for it... :)
    Best wishes!

  4. Love the way each print is carried all the way across. Gives the woven illusion so much more effectively than just scattering an entire precut pack across the quilt. Thanks for that third pic--now I see! As for hand binding, Jenny is right, plus some thread brands (Mettler, for one) are more likely to tangle. What motif will you quilt in the white? 5. I love this quilt! I love everything about it. Magic!
Thank you for showing how you made the blocks. Would you consider writing a pattern, too? I am sure I!m not the only one who would want to buy it.
I am a very slow at hand-sewing also, but I enjoy it. One thought: shorter lengths of thread, say, 16", tangle less. I like thread conditioner, too, and I think Threads has an article or YouTube video on the "correct" direction for threading a needle.
I look forward to seeing the hand-quilting.

  6. When you say "not enough quilting" do you mean not as much as you'd like, or not enough to hold it together/quilted too far apart per the batting recommendations? Just curious!

    It looks lovely!

  8. I love this quilt and the colors you've used! It's bright and cheery and looks like woven ribbons when it's really built with triangles! Great job! Do you have a pattern or tutorial available? I think I'd really enjoy making this quilt for myself.

  12. Just like many others I love the pattern! And your colors are gorgeous. I enjoy hand stitching my binding -- whether I'm fast or slow. I find I'm faster if I JUST stitch, but usually I stitch while the TV is on so I'm slower. It's all good though -- stitching keeps me distracted enough to not be driven crazy by my husband's endlessly flipping channels!

  41. This is a beauty. I am always drawn to woven style quilts. With little children in the house, you must hurry to get things done. Over the years I have learned to enjoy the binding process and its deliberate " slowness". Have a happy Thanksgiving.

  42. Your close-up photo revealed the mystery of how this quilt was pieced. Very clever, and the quilt is eye-catching! I'm a slow hand stitcher, too. Bindings take me forever, and hand quilting even longer. I'd forgotten about thread conditioner- mine is used up and have not replaced it. I will now.
