Octagon Shimmer Baby Quilt

A few weeks ago I saw Jennifer Sampou's beautiful pattern and immediately bought it.  I don't buy many patterns these days because I like the freedom of being able to do my own thing, but this pattern is so fun and after making a baby quilt version I am sure it is a pattern that I will be using again.

It is basically a giant, scrappy spiderweb block and it was so fun to make.  Everything is better when it is bigger (can you tell I am from Texas?).

The colors for the front were inspired by this Small World Corduroy print.  It is the second time I have used this print to back a baby quilt and I love it just as much the second time.  It is so much fun.  I used a binding that is a little wider than normal (I cut my strips 2.75" instead of 2.5") and I like how squishy and soft it is.

I quilted it with a crazy, random crosshatch.  Crosshatching is my favorite way to quilt because I love the texture and feel, but I have been having some difficulty with my shoulder which meant that marking lines on the quilt with my Hera marker was not going to happen, so I had some fun with this craziness.

Did you know that you can back a quilt with corduroy?  This particular corduroy is fine wale which (I am pretty sure) means that the lines of the corduroy are tiny and close together.  So this fabric resembles flannel in the coziness and the weight but has a nice ribbed texture to it. I do prewash the corduroy first.  I have used corduroy for quilt backs a few times, including this one which receives almost daily use in my home and I haven't had any issues.

Finished size: 36" x 36"

This quilt is now listed in my Etsy Shop.

  2. I love the look of the replaced hexis -- well worth the effort! I know, because I, too, had to replace a couple of hexis on my hand project . . . SO much work! However, all that difficulty removing the old ones means that our hexi projects are WELL MADE, and won't unravel on us . . . ever! :o)

  5. Thanks for the tip about corduroy; I've always wondered how to use it other than in making clothes! I love the free form straight line quilting. I think it's perfect for the design of this quilt!

  6. This is a great idea for baby quilt, I especially like ones that aren't particularly baby themed then they can grow with the child. I like the idea of backing with corduroy too. x
