Happy Friday! We are just wrapping up Spring Break at our house and it has been a long week. I love my children dearly but they are driving me crazy.
This quilt is actually going to go to one of my son's kindergarten teachers. She is wonderful; I love how much she appreciates my son's personality and has helped him to learn and grow.
This color scheme was fun to work with but is a little out of my comfort zone. I love pink and orange, but am not big on yellow or green, but together I really like the color combo.
The binding is one of my all time favorite prints - Chicopee simple plaid. I have gone through so much of it and am down to about a half yard, I think I might need to hunt some down. It makes such a great binding fabric.

Lovely quilt. I've never released a pattern other than free for my guild. But I can tell you that especially for beginner quilters, a well tested pattern makes all the difference. So I'd have pattern testers. This is such a great design, you'll want the instructions to shine as well. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteThat quilt is sweet, and far better than another coffee cup with an apple on it. Good luck with the pattern work and release. I've only cobbled out things for myself and my friends, nothing formal, but I do appreciate a well written pattern (or recipe).

ReplyDeleteI have a dear friend who has sold quite a few of her patterns and she always does pattern test quilts - it not only takes the 'kinks' out of the pattern but it verifies that the instructions are clear. Good luck - would be happy to test for you and BTW ... Love the quilt! A very lucky teacher indeed.

I have tested a few patterns for other designers and have always felt that a second pair of eyes really helped in the end. I've helped to clarify, reorganize, and illustrate difficult patterns. Also of course checking measurements, spelling, grammar, and general mistakes. I have in the past used patterns with errors and there is nothing more frustrating!

ReplyDeleteWow-- you are raising the bar on teacher gifts pretty high there. And here I was patting myself on the back if I remembered to send something for Xmas :) Beautiful work -- I think the colors are perfectly balanced... there is not one color/pattern stealing the show and they are all "playing nicely together" in the final composition.

ReplyDeleteA quilting friend works for a quilt shop that has released numerous patterns. Initially they did not use testers but on several patterns there were errors they'd read right over. Naturally complaints ensued and now most if not all of their patterns are tested. Good luck.

I know Terry Atkinson and she tests her patterns with small groups at various quilt shops to get lots of feedback. There's nothing worse than finding errors in a pattern that result in not having enough fabric , etc. Good luck--it's a wonderful design!

ReplyDeleteI've designed and written for a couple of quilt magazines. My patterns have always been tested by the magazine before publication. I'm an English teacher so I'm rather picky about grammar and such, so my recommendation would naturally be to have the pattern tested and edited.

I keep coming back to stare at this gorgeous quilt. Will be waiting for the pattern to be released. Please have it tested. I have purchased several kits from an online store and have run into pattern problems with everyone of them. Will buy their fabrics but not their patterns.

ReplyDeleteLove your quilt. I have a friend that produces patterns and she has a group that gets together and she gives us a pattern to test. To make sure that it is correct and easy to understand. Also, it gives her a chance to see how others might interpret the pattern with their color choices. If you are still looking for someone to test your patterns, I would be interested.
ReplyDeleteYour new pattern is lovely, and your quilt will make the perfect cover picture. As a pattern designer, yes, you should have your pattern tested. And have someone look over your math, checking the number of pieces to cut and the yardage required, etc. I always do, and I am always shocked at what I missed!

ReplyDeleteI test patterns for 2 other bloggers, though its not often as they rotate between a few of us ladies, and yes, I think its very important as we have found mistakes in the patterns before. :) The ones I do will give me perimeters, ask me to do a baby quilt top or a throw, etc, and email them back all my results. If the math added up, cutting instructions, ease of instructions, and anything else we can think of. I would be happy to help if you like. Nice job. Cute quilt. Like the fabrics you chose.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely have someone test your pattern before publishing. I usually have two people test mine. Patterns sell a lot better on Craftsy, and there is no charge to list or sell there. Etsy is better for actual handmade items. I have stores in both.
