If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed some in-progress shots of this quilt pop up over the past few weeks.
With the assistance of this really fantastic book, I have been making a medallion quilt. This isn't my first medallion quilt (see here and here), but it was the most fun.
I'm going to try to explain how much I enjoyed Make Your Own Medallion without sounding too over the top. I don't want to sound like I am trying to sell you something because, even though the publisher did send me this book and there are affiliate links in this post, my thoughts here are genuine. This is a great book.
On the surface level, this book is great because it includes several complete, ready to go medallion patterns. It also includes a way to make your own medallion quilt with several different options for the center block and lots of possible border options and combinations. These things are all great.
It also includes directions on how to make several different blocks to be used in the border along with tables that show cutting instructions for different sizes. It is nice to have this reference all in one book and I have already referred to it while working on a non-medallion project. This is also great.
But I think what makes this book really great and important and inspirational, is the way that Erin uses borders in her book. Maybe I have just been missing the point, but it is quite a bit more evolved than the way that I think about borders. They play off of each other in a way that I found truly inspirational, especially when combined with the beautiful color and pattern combinations used in her quilts.
For my quilt, I used the Dogwood Medallion pattern in the book (I promise, it's easier than it looks) and then added a variety of borders. The medallion and the first border were made with fabrics from my scrap bin and then I used that for inspiration for the colors in the rest of the quilt.
Once I had the medallion and first border finished, I mocked up the rest of my quilt in EQ8. It's not necessary, but it was super helpful.
For the backing I used a coral Cotton + Steel print that I had in my stash and I finished off the binding with my normal big stitch method.
Finished size: 60" x 60"
Pattern: My own concoction from Make Your Own Medallion by Erin Burke Harris
Batting: Quilter's Dream Cotton Select
I love that! Might have to get that book as I do a lot of those type quilts.
