Another Sylvie Quilt

When it comes to sashing fabric, I tend to play it safe. Usually that means white - maybe a light gray or a low volume print - but I know what works and I usually go for it.

When I wrote my Sylvie quilt pattern, I knew I wanted to try a version with a darker sashing. Last year I made a version of my Tessa pattern using navy sashing and loved it, so I figured I would give that a try.

Yes, I know - navy is still kind of playing it safe. It is basically a neutral color, but I am taking baby steps. To go with the navy fabric, I pulled a variety of blues, greens, yellows, and neutrals from my stash. I didn't want anything too dark to blend in with the sashing fabric, so I kept the other prints pretty light.

I ended up using a lot of the prints in my stash that I really love but rarely end up using, so it was a fun project to put together. I love those citron tigers - so stinking cute.

This pattern is so quick to put together, it has become my go-to quick project. I think next time I might be even more daring with my sashing. I love would to do something neon.

The backing fabric was pulled from my stash - it is an older Cotton + Steel print. The binding is Kona Navy.

You know, I really love a pattern that doesn't chop up the fabric into tiny pieces. It is so fun to actually get to see it - much more useful than having it sit on my shelf.

  1. I love all your quilts! I am intrigued by your quilting pattern. The spacing seems somewhat random. Is that done on a long-arm or on a sewing machine? I use mainly straight line quilting, but feel the spacing of the lines has to be so exact. Your style would be "freeing".

    1. I do it on my machine and the spacing is random - I call it an "organic grid" and it is very freeing!

  2. This navy option is wonderful! I like the white, but that navy really pops and shows off the prints so well!

  3. I think you are very brave! The navy has a nice bass "voice" - think Barry White! Smooth. Nicely done!
