Scrap Friendly Patterns #scraphappyfebruary

I'm sorry I have been neglecting the Scrap Happy February posts - I had some stuff come up this past week that required all of my attention. But now I'm back at it!

Today I am talking about scrap patterns. There are soooo many scrap options out there and it would be pretty much impossible to cover them all so I am going to have two posts for you: one with patterns that are specifically intended to be used with scraps and one discussing how to use scraps for (just about) any quilt pattern.

When you are cutting scraps down into uniform pieces, it can be very helpful to already have some patterns in mind for future projects. I will usually cut down some common sizes (2.5" squares for example) and then I put a post-it note with other sizes on my cutting table so I can be prepared for future patterns.

Since I know my own patterns best, I am going to include several of my own patterns and tutorials but I'm going to mix in some favorite patterns and books.

In My Shop

This list is not all inclusive - I have several other scrap tutorials and patterns in my shop but these are the most popular ones.

The Plaid-ish Quilt

I think most of you are familiar with this one since it is (by far!) the most popular item in my shop. This is a free tutorial that uses different valued scrap fabrics to make a plaid design. This pattern works well for larger scraps and for long strips of fabric and tiny squares.

  1. I have made a number of scrap quilts. My favorites are a giant postage stamp quilt (using 2.5 inch squares), Scrappy Hearts (pattern by Emily Dennis) and then for a friend I made a quarter-circle quilt using all scraps that was completely crazy and bright. That was the most fun, I think! I have a finished Plaidish quilt top that is just waiting to be quilted. :)
    Thanks for sharing your inspiration!

  2. Thanks for these ideas! I've been wanting to try your value quilt! Another super scrappy quilt is the Scrap Vortex: http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2015/06/scrap-vortex-qal-week-one.html

    1. Oh that's right! I knew she had one that I loved but I couldn't remember what it was called. Amanda is the scrap master, too bad she isn't blogging anymore!
