Twin Diana Quilts - Rainbow Baby Quilts for Snowflake Babies

Let me tell you a little bit of backstory for these rainbow-y versions of the Diana Quilt pattern that I recently made.

My two oldest kids had the same teacher for 3rd grade. When my daughter was in her class, her teacher was just starting the adoption process. When my son was in her class a couple of years later, she adopted a baby girl (and of course I made her a quilt!).

Late last year, she sent me a text and asked if I would be willing to make quilts for her brand new twins. Of course I said yes (even though I still have a kid at the school, I didn't know that she had been pregnant because of distance learning and then later parents not being allowed in the school as a Covid precaution).

She told me that the babies were "snowflake babies" and she wanted to incorporate snowflakes into the quilt in a small way (she did not want the snowflakes to be prominent or for the quilts to be winter-y). I wasn't familiar with the term so I looked it up: a baby born following the transfer of a surplus embryo produced during the in-vitro fertilization of one woman to the womb of another woman who was not a cell donor. Wow, that is amazing.

I wasn't sure how I wanted to coordinate the quilts or how I wanted to incorporate the snowflakes. At the time, I was working on my Diana Quilt Pattern so I thought I would make two rainbow versions for the babies and I figured I could find a snowflake fabric for the backs of the quilts.

When I started looking around, everything with snowflakes was super wintery or Christmas-y and I knew that wasn't what she was looking for. But then I found this fabric. Isn't it amazing? It's an embossed luxe minky so it is so, so soft. The snowflakes are subtle, especially after quilting. I loved it.

This is the second time I have used a luxe minky for a quilt (highly recommend it, I have a few tips in this post). Just like last time, I reversed the way I sewed on the binding - I attached it to the back of the quilt and then hand sewed it to the front. I think this is easier than hand sewing into the minky.

This past weekend, my oldest two kids and I met up with her to give her the quilts. It was so great to see her and her cute little family.
