remixed geese

A free pattern for this quilt is now available from Robert Kaufman.
remixed geese
A few weeks ago I started this quilt on a little bit of a whim.  I wanted something to work on that was really fun and I wanted something that my daughter could be involved in.  She requested rainbow colors and triangles, and I had just seen this quilt, so I thought I'd give flying geese a try.

I have been collecting these Ann Kelle Remix prints since they were first released.  They are so vibrant and fun.  I let my daughter pick the prints that she wanted (she pretty much chose everything that had pink or flowers on it) and then we picked some coordinating solids from my stash.

I also wanted to give something else a try: I backed this quilt in Moda Snuggles.  This was a little bit scary because I have read that others have had issues using minky-like fabric because it stretches, but I am happy to report that it was much easier to work with than I anticipated.  I spent longer-than-normal making sure that everything was basted well and I ended up with a nice, smooth, pucker-free quilt.

The main drawback about the Snuggles was that it is heavier and caused more friction with the machine when I was free motion quilting.  I probably should have just stuck with straight lines for the quilting, but I knew my 4 year old would prefer swirls no matter how imperfect they were.

I originally planned to use a solid for the binding, but my daughter asked for a rainbow quilt so I decided not to hold back.  It needed to be over the top!

This guy thinks he needs a blanket now, how can I turn down this face?

  7. This is a lovely lovely quilt. One question for you - when you back a quilt with a minky like fabric, do you also use batting, or is the minky enough on its own?
