Birthday Sewing

Thank you all so much for your comments, words of encouragement, and advice on my last post.  I have sent the pattern off to a few people to have them test it so hopefully that goes well and the pattern will be available sometime next month.

Today is Harper's 8th birthday and I was really surprised how interested she was in having me make things for her birthday.  Not that she didn't also want store bought things - because she wanted plenty of those too - but she requested a crown, a quilt, and a bag.  I made the crown, am working on the quilt, and the bag will have to be a belated gift.
Here is the quilt top that I am working on.  I am hand quilting it, so it will be another week or so before I am done, but I used double gauze for the backing so I am excited to give the quilt to her.  As you can see, she isn't big on pink ;)

We went pretty simple for her birthday crown.  I just used 2 pieces of wool felt with a layer of stiff interfacing in between.  The trim is hot glued on.

Her other birthday requests were science toys, getting her ears pierced, and a Nerf bow and arrow.  My mom sent her the bow and arrow and she is in heaven.

She is the sweetest 8 year old I could ask for.  It's hard to believe that this was 5 years ago!
I would like to make sewing something for each of my kids a tradition for their birthdays.  So I was wondering . . . do you do any birthday sewing?

  1. Your post made me feel quite nostalgic....I used to make my sons clothes for their birthdays...there was a publication called 'Top Kids' which had great patterns for boys (a boon 20 years ago when you could count the patterns for boys in catalogues on one hand) and they would look at the magazines and indicate what they wanted, and I would make and personalise garments for them. These would be a tad more complicated and special than my usual sewing. I fondly recall a windcheater with an applique of a rocket, and other multi-coloured zippered creations. Of course this all fizzled once they hit around 11 or 12, so enjoy your children's enthusiasm for your creations while it lasts! I now have a 4yo grandson and have unearthed my patterns and having great fun again!

  2. I love sewing for birthdays! Picking out fabric I think they will enjoy, finding just the right project... So fun! Maybe I should start sewing for my own birthday too. ;)

  3. Your daughter is beautiful! I love her blue/green/white quilt & her crown! I am all about the birthday sewing this year. I have 5 birthday quilts planned for later this year...I'd better get to work!

  4. We have three sons, who are now in their twenties, and I would sew pyjama shorts for them each year in some of the great boy-themed fabrics which were available - sharks, skateboards, insects. I've made capes (green sparkly fabric and black velveteen) and they were very popular. Drawstring bags for keeping toy sets (k'nex, marble mazes, lego) together were another good thing to sew for boys.

  6. Starting at age 11 for my oldest, and 10 for my youngest, I've made each of my girls a pillow that represents big things they did or love in the year before. It's meant to be a sort of "year in review." My oldest daughter turns 18 on Wednesday and this year's pillow is a paper pieced car (for getting her driver's license and a car) and some astronomy fabric to represent a college class she's taking. I'm going to add embroidery elements all around the edge of the pillow, but I'm just waiting for her list of what to include.
