Denyse Schmidt Quilt

A few weeks ago my grandparents moved into an assisted living facility.  My grandma has had dementia for a while and it was becoming increasingly difficult for my grandpa to take care of her. They live in a small town in East Texas near where I grew up, but where none of their children or grandchildren have lived for a long time.  Since I am not able to visit them right now, I decided I wanted to make them a quilt.

I pinned this quilt a long time ago and have always wanted to make something similar and I was planning on using a bunch of Denyse Schmidt prints for my grandparent's quilt, so when I was browsing through my Pinterest board, Megan's quilt popped out at me.

Denyse is my favorite fabric designer.  Her prints are so versatile and look good together or mixed with other collections.

I quilted a line through every other diagonal row.  Since I don't know how the quilt will be laundered in their facility, I zig zag stitched the binding on to make sure it is secure.  I also attached a label to the back of the quilt with their names.

It went in the mail yesterday and should arrive by the end of the week!

Finished size: 54" x 66"
Backing fabric: Flea Market Fancy Leaf and Dot Red (available here)
Binding fabric: Florence Lincoln Log Carnet (available here or here)
Batting: Quilter's Dream Cotton Select

  1. This is so beautiful. I know it will make your grampa really happy. It is a huge adjustment for him. For your gramma, I know it is a struggle and depending on her presence of mind, she will get good care. My parents are 93 and they are 4 miles from me. I actually packed them up and moved them from Maryland. It was scary for them, but I did everything I could to make the transition good. They live in an Erickson community now.
Anyway, This quilt is so pretty. I love the colors. I hope that you can go visit them some time soon. I visit my parents almost every day. The time we share together is a gift.
You are so sweet to make this beautiful gift for them. They will know you care about them

  7. I'm a Denyse fan too and I love your quilt. It's so earthy and traditional. I'd like to try this pattern but can't find it online. If you'd please share the size of your finished blocks, I think I can figure it out from there. It'd be PERFECT for my traditional husband on cold winter nights!

  13. So based on your overall dimensions and the blocks I see, it looks like the blocks are 6" finished 6.5" unfinished, and probably the 9 patch is 2.5" squares? What size were the squares you stitched and flipped on the other block?
