My kids' birthdays are one after the other and it is birthday season! My son's 2nd birthday is coming up and he loves fire trucks so I decided to make him a quilt for his birthday. I made him a quilt before he was born, but I hadn't met him yet and it's not very "him."
My son also loves the song Hurry, Hurry Drive the Firetruck and it kept getting stuck in my head while I was making the quilt. Which was not very fun, because this quilt felt like it took FOREVER.
It is comprised of 780 little tiny squares and it seemed like the more I worked on the quilt, the further I got from finishing it. Pixel quilts are not of the faint of heart.
The timing on this quilt was perfect because last week, August learned to climb out of his crib. That crazy child! This one is the perfect size for a toddler bed.
I quilted it with my favorite cross-hatching.
And backed it with Mammoth flannel. If you haven't tried Mammoth flannel for a backing, it is wonderful. Most flannel fabrics are fuzzy, but pretty smooth. I love the texture that Mammoth flannel has.
The binding is a black solid and I hand stitched it down with Perle cotton.
Finished size: 50" x 60"
Batting: Quilter's Dream Cotton Select
Backing: Mammoth Flannel
This is awesome. Love the big fire truck. What a special quilt and gift for your little one.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteAdorable and super fun! great job.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI love this adorable quilt! Is there a pattern?
ReplyDeleteThanks! There isn't a pattern, but a few people have asked so I will probably post some rough directions in the next week or two.
DeleteThis is so cute! I bet he will love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! He loves it, thank goodness!
DeleteBravo! The perfect quilt for a little man! All those blocks! What a great mom!
ReplyDeleteThanks! So. Many. Blocks.
DeleteOh he will love this! And your handstitching on the binding is beautifully done. I'll have to try that some day, on something small to start. I did a lot of hand quilting on the first quilt I finished and enjoyed the process, and the look.
ReplyDeleteThanks! If you go a few posts back, I have a little tutorial about doing the binding that way, but it is basically the same as hand quilting.
DeleteI love this quilt and am expecting a grandson to arrive in October. I have the same question as Stephanie, is there a pattern available?
ReplyDeleteThanks! There isn't a pattern, but I will try to post some rough directions in the next couple weeks.
DeleteHow awesome! I'm sure he will be thrilled. Such a labor of love!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteLove this quilt!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris!
DeleteHow very fun! I am sure August will live it!
ReplyDeleteHe loves it, thanks for the comment!
DeleteAugust is a lucky little boy! It's a beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteWow! I love the way you did the hand stitching on the binding - it's the first time I've seen it done this way and it's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I did a tutorial on sewing down the binding with big stitches a few posts back if you want more info.
DeleteThis quilt is so adorable. I am sure it is time consuming to make but so worth it. I hope your son loves it.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing! The pixelated-ness adds a whole new dimension to it. Maybe someday I'll have the guts to try a pixel quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh, ya gotta watch out for #3. They come out crazy! My girlfriends and I took note, and in all our families, the third child was always the sunshine of the the family but also was pretty unpredictable!
ReplyDeleteWhen boys begin a Houdini act, it's time to move to a toddler bed. lol Escapees tend to just get more ingenious when mommy tries to hold them in.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet quilt! He will love it even more as he grows. It's amazing!
Such a great quilt! My 3-year old is also crazy about fire trucks, but I don't think I have the patience for a pixelated quilt. I hope your son loves it!
ReplyDeleteMy grandson has a firetruck bed - it would be perfect for that bed! However, Henry's 6 1/2, so it won't be long till he's outgrown his bed. It is a wonderful little quilt!
ReplyDeleteHi Erica! I have my own great-nephew that is two and would adore this quilt. Talk about a labor of love - I do love him enough to make one for him, I think. Anyway, I will definitely check out your tutorial. Thank you so much - Michele @ From Bolt to Beauty suggested I pop over. ~smile~ Roseanne
