Quilted Fall Throw Pillows

Our living room has been in desperate need of new throw pillows for a while.
Fall Pillows
Nothing is wrong with the old ones, but SOMEONE keeps hogging them. So for the past little while I have been slowly adding to a Pinterest board of pillow ideas (if anyone wants to be invited to the board, just leave your email in the comments and I will invite you, I would love to see your inspiration!).

Pepper Loves Pillows
I had picked up some of these 18" pillow forms a while back - they have more of a feathery "throw pillow" feel than the ones we have used in the past.

My plan was to cut a bunch of 2 1/2" squares and then randomly arrange them for each pillow, but each one kind of took on a life of its own.
Fall Pillows 3
The first one did end up random.  The fabrics were a variety of pinks, oranges, yellows, browns, and teals.  The backing of this pillow is a beloved Lotta Jansdotter print - I seriously love this fabric.  And I used Svetlana's pillow closure tutorial like I did on the last pillow I made.

For the second pillow I made an "X" with the brown squares and then outlined it with blues, pinks, oranges, and yellows.  The backing is a linen print from the Outside Oslo collection by Jessica Jones.

The third pillow is semi-rainbow-ish with some browns mixed in.  The backing is another Outside Oslo print.  I fell in love with this collection when it came out and have . . . a lot of it.
Fall Pillow
After making these I feel motivated to make a few pillow covers for different seasons and rotate them throughout the year.  I have been meaning to that for years but maybe this year it will happen?  At least I have some for fall.

A view from my sewing table.  Notice how clean it is!  If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the before and after photos from last week. It took tremendous effort but I am hoping to keep things a little more tidy.

  1. Cute pillows. Does SOMEONE have a preference for one of them?

    1. Thanks! The dog (Pepper) doesn't have a preference, she will snuggle up with any and all pillows and blankets that she can find!

  2. I love how your pillows turned out. At first glance they look like matching pillows, but at second glance you can see they are all slightly different yet very coordinating. We also have a pillow hugger but he isn't quite as large as yours!

    1. Thanks! It was fun to give them a little variation. Our pillow hogger is getting huge, she is much bigger than I expected her to be!

  3. They look great! I need to make some colorful pillows for my couches and chairs, too.

    1. Thanks! Pillows are such a fun project - fairly quick but then they get lots of use. The problem is coming up with the energy to get them started!

  6. these are gorgeous! how do you do your pillows?
do you do a quilt sandwich for the front of your pillows or just the batting without a lining?

    1. I do not use a lining. I know that a lot of people do, but frankly it just seems like a waste of fabric to me. I quilt the pillow top + batting and then just use a single of layer of fabric for the back of the pillow. I hope that helps!

  7. Your fall pillows are attractive. I imagine they will soon be on the floor so someone can get comfy, but isn't that a reason to make more when the mood hits?
I made a couple of pillows this week, also. But nothing so involved as my customer wanted solid fabrics. I prefer your pieced prints and colors and fun.
You are welcome to snag all the pillow ideas you want from my Pinterest pillow boards. Be forewarned, I've been in a "word" stage recently, so the first ones all have words on them. :)
