I was playing around with some different ideas for how to use the Sunprint fabrics from the January Culcita Box, when I opened up the Southwest Modern book my Kristi Schroeder that I had recently received from Lucky Spool Media and saw the Sandia Quilt.
It is a great, quick pattern and worked perfectly with fat quarters. I decided to start with the warmer colors in the upper left corner and gradually move down to the cooler colors in the lower right corner.
Prepare to be shocked: I did not do my normal straight-ish, randomly spaced lines for the quilting. I did actual straight, regularly spaced lines. Ok, they are still not perfectly straight, but I'm only human!
When I was looking for backing fabric in my stash, I found this Ikea print that was leftover from making curtains for our bedroom in San Diego, but it was about 5 inches too short. No worries; after some searching, I found 5 more yards of it in my stash.
The binding fabric is FreeSpirit solid in black and I sewed down the binding by hand with my normal big stitches.
And I added a label to the back of the quilt. I am still working on where exactly I want to place the label and how exactly I feel about them. Sometime in the next few weeks I will write up a post with more details.

Working on two baby quilts for pregnant friends right now!
ReplyDeleteLove the big stitches binding! I am currently working on a jelly roll rug!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen big stitching on a binding. It adds a really nice design element.
ReplyDeleteI have been making guild donation quilts for our local NICU. I have bound 3 and created 4 tops ready to FMQ as soon as I clean and set up my sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe those white stitches are by hand! You are really good! I just last night started a tiny Dresden sewing kit, and though it is a bit fiddly, I love how it's turning out. I'm also trying to finish up my Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt (without a design wall), and a rail fence quilt.
ReplyDeleteTrying to finish 2 baby quilts, then on to something new.
ReplyDeleteYou always seem to make quick work of your monthly fabric boxes. I like that. After sewing up 32 pillowcases in January my goal this month was 13 double sided flannel blankets and 7 fleece blankets. Between sewing these items and cutting up fabrics for 3 scrap quilt ideas and some scrap management, I am about 3/4 complete. I have 1 week left to get the sewing done.

I am currently working on a dinosaur baby quilt, charity blocks for a family who lost their 6 year old daughter to the flu last week, and I need to quilt and bind another baby quilt - this one fox themed. Working on learning freestyle quilting and anxious to commit it to latest baby quilt.
ReplyDeleteCurrently doing more baby quilts - just finished matching twin girls quilts that are 41" square, different neutral charm blocks with ragged circles in the center of each, to make it an "I Spy" quilt. Made the quilts with different bindings...one rose pink polka dots and the other lavender polka dots. Made matching gift bags (with french seams) from the backing fabrics and stitched up ties for each. The expectant mama will receive both this weekend, when her mom (who I work with) gives them to her. Another set of twins on the way for another co-worker whose daughter is expecting (sex unknown), and then a large quilt to do for a long time friend who will have back surgery soon. I give away 99% of my quilts, and I make a LOT of them, mostly scrappy quilts, so scraps are ALWAYS welcome! Deb E / Oregon mdenders@msn.com
