But I did my best to make it work even if we had to take this one under my front porch.
Here is my February Giant Block quilt! I decided to go really big, this I the 36" version and it was gloriously fast. The entire quilt top was done in one evening.
I used fabric that was leftover from a project that I will be sharing soon. It is Sienna by Alexia Abegg and it is gorgeous. I love the Cotton + Steel prints that are on unbleached cotton because the fabric is so soft.
The backing fabric is a favorite of mine: Chicopee Corduroy from Denyse Schmidt. This is the 5th time I have used it as a quilt backing (see here, here, here, and here) and I love it more every time. It is fine whale corduroy, which means the corduroy lines are very small and it gives the fabric a really nice texture. It is lightweight and is cozy like flannel.
It is still available here and I just bought a bunch more. It is a lot like using flannel as a quilt backing (and yes, I do prewash it).
I used Kona Navy for the binding and used my normal big stitches to sew it to the back of the quilt by hand.
I did find an error in the tutorial when I was making the quilt and have corrected it in the tutorial post.
Finished size: 45" x 45"
Pattern: February Giant Block
Fabric: Sienna by Alexia Abegg
Backing: Chicopee Corduroy
Batting: Quilter's Dream Cotton Select
Gorgeous!! Do you prewash your quilting fabrics as well?
ReplyDeleteNo, usually I just prewash flannels and since this fabric is pretty similar to a flannel, I prewash it too.
DeleteI am BOM chair for a very small (35)quilt guild. May I have your permission to use your Giant Blocks for next year's BOM
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely!
DeleteLove your quilt! I've just purchased corduroy for the backing on my denim quilt, any advise? Should I use batting?
ReplyDeleteIt's up to you. I have never skipped the batting, but I have used a flannel sheet instead of batting, and liked how it turned out. If you want the quilt to have the normal "plush" feeling, definitely use the batting!
DeleteThis is adorable!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteYour hand finished binding gets me EVERY time!!! It's such a lovely finishing detail
ReplyDeleteThanks, I really enjoy finishing the quilt this way. I don't know if I will ever go back to traditional stitching!
