Let me introduce you to the Overcast Baby Quilt! I was originally going to call this post "Cloudy Day Baby Quilt," but then I remembered that I already had a post with that name. Oops!
A few weeks ago I received an email invitation for a virtual baby shower. My very best friend from high school, Cynthia, is having her first baby; she lives in Pennsylvania and has lived all over the world and the US and wanted all of her friends to be able to attend via Skype.
I knew that I wanted to make her a quilt and, after playing around with a few ideas and remembering our shared love of cloudy, overcast days, I decided on this design.
I was on a bit of a time crunch so I needed to use fabric from my stash (which is not a big deal because my stash is . . . embarrassingly substantial) so I went with mostly solids plus a couple of my favorite Add it Up prints.
For the backing I used those super adorable Cotton + Steel bears in flannel. They weren't the best match for the quilt and I had better matches in my stash, but they were the best match for this project anyway.
I did something a little different with the quilting on this one - don't worry I still did my "organic grid" - but this time I used Aurifil 28 wt thread. It is quite a bit thicker than the 50 wt thread I normally use, but it added a fun detail to the quilt. I used a mix of light blue and a medium gray. (this 28 wt thread also works beautifully for big stitch binding)
I mailed the quilt (along with a whole box of other assorted baby essentials) to Cynthia and her Skype baby shower was a ton of fun. There were people on at least 4 different continents participating and I am so happy for her little family.
A pattern for this quilt is in the works so watch for it in a few weeks!
What a great pattern! These are great colors and it makes a fabulous baby quilt.
