The Violet QAL Week 2 - Cutting Your Background Fabric

The Violet QAL - Fabric Pull #1

I'm not going to lie, this isn't my favorite step. But it is a necessary one! I did a video showing me cutting background fabric - it is not going to be winning any awards, but hopefully it will help you. You can find it here.

There isn't too much to add to my previous posts about cutting your fabrics so this will be pretty brief, but we will be cutting several different sizes so I wanted to note a few things.

  • Cut your largest pieces first. This way, you can use the leftovers to cut the smaller pieces.
  • Label your fabrics as you cut them and organize them by size. This will simplify piecing your blocks.

For this pattern, I would recommend cutting a bunch of 2.5" x WOF strips and then subcutting all of your pieces from those. Sometimes I like to cut the wider width (for example, I would cut a 16.5" wide strip and then sub-cut 2.5" pieces from that) but for this quilt that will give you a little more fabric waste.

This part of the process can be a little discouraging for new quilters because cutting background fabric is kind of monotonous.  But don't worry, you can sew soon!

I actually already made my first quilt top this week, I couldn't help myself! (Note: if you want to work ahead, that is 100% ok with me!)

I tend to be fairly conservative with. my background fabric picks - for this quilt I used Designer Essentials Solids in Mist. It is a really nice off-white. I am considering a more daring pick for one of my other quilts but I don't know if I am brave enough!

    1. It is going to be really fun to see everyone's quilts - I am grateful that a lot of people are more brave than I am and I can see the results of their bravery!
