A Penny Quilt for a Teacher

I always like to give quilts to my kids' teachers at the end of the year. My son, Jonah, was extra enthusiastic about the idea so even though I have a giant stack of finished quilts, we decided to start from scratch and we picked the Penny Quilt.

This year has been on hard on students but it has been so hard on teachers. My son has ADHD and struggled big time with online school. His teacher (who was also my daughter's 5th grade teacher) was wonderful with him so I wanted to make sure we did something just for her. Plus I always love a good excuse to make another quilt.

I started with the backing fabric (which is a great gingham print by Maureen Cracknell) and then pulled a variety of greens, teals, grays, yellows, oranges, and blues from my stash. It was a bit of a hodgepodge but I think the finished result was just what we were looking for.

The sashing fabric is my new favorite solid - I have used it on several of the last quilts I have made. It is FreeSpirit Designer Essential Solids in Natural. It works with warm or cool colors and is a little less stark than a bright white. Love it.

We wrapped this up and Jonah was so excited to give it to his teacher. He is such a tenderhearted kid and it was a very sweet experience for him to give something to her - I could tell he really appreciated that she had been patient with him this year.

This pattern is great for random pulls from your stash - if you would like to make your own version of the Penny Quilt Pattern, you can pick up a copy in the shop.
