A Baby Size Virginia Quilt

Usually when I write a pattern, I make try to make 3 different versions of the quilt so I can show it off with different fabrics. But for Virginia I couldn't help myself - this is version #4.

I have been working through some of the baby size backing fabrics in my stash and there was one in particular that I just love and really wanted to use - it is the inspiration behind the colors in this quilt.

It is pretty common for me to use colors in a backing fabric as color inspiration, but this pattern lends itself really well to a random collection of colors so it was perfect. I just found a fabric that coordinated with most of the colors on the backing fabric and then made the quilt top - no planning involved.

Since each fabric is used equally, you don't have to worry about where in the block the fabric will be located, etc. I just made the blocks and then arranged them in a way where the colors and values were balanced and it made a low stress, fun, quick project.

All of the prints in the quilt top are "basics" - a single color with white, off-white, or gray. Most of my stash is made up of this type of print because they are so useful. My favorite brand for basics is Ruby Star Society, but there is also some Lizzy House Pearl Bracelets, a Moda print, a Heather Ross print, and an Art Gallery print mixed in there.

One more photo that shows the backing fabric because I love it so much - I really wish I had stocked up on enough yardage of this one for a lap size quilt.
