Stacked Squares Tutorial

Several years ago I wrote a tutorial for the Moda Bake Shop that was wonderfully popular. It uses layer cake squares and jelly roll strips and is fairly simple to put together while still giving you a lot of creative flexibility. After lots of requests, I supplemented that lap size tutorial with info for baby, twin, and queen sizes as well.

In the last year or so, due to the large number of posts contained on their blog, the Moda Bake Shop lost some of its tutorials. They are working on getting them all back up, but I thought it was a good excuse to update the tutorial and combine all of the information into one location. Plus, I have started getting 10+ emails a day from people asking me to send them the PDF and it was getting a little overwhelming.

If you would like to download the PDF for the Stacked Squares Tutorial, it is now available over in the shop (for free). I do have a few notes about the tutorial to keep in mind.

Stacked Squares Quilt Tutorial - Kitchen Table Quilting

  • In my original quilt, I used some white solid yardage for some of my jelly roll strips to break up all of the patterns.
  • Each jelly roll strip needs a match. If you are using a jelly roll to make the lap size, you will actually need 2 identical jelly rolls so that each strip has an identical strip to use with it. The tutorial talk about this but I wanted to make sure I it is clear.
  • The tutorial lists the number of blocks for each size (the baby size is 5 blocks x 6 blocks, etc.) and has a sample layout for the lap size. If you are making any of the other sizes, or even if you are making the lap size, your layout will depend a lot on your fabric selection so I didn't give examples of each size.

And just one more thing.
  • This is a free tutorial, but please do not copy or share the tutorial with others. Please send them to my shop to download their own copy. While I enjoy sharing free content here and on Instagram, these types of projects are time consuming. I hope that when people visit my shop, they take a minute to check out the other tutorials available, as well as the PDF or paper patterns that I sell and that help keep this blog and the tutorials going.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial! If you make your own version, use the hashtag #stackedsquaresquilt on Instagram and make sure to tag me so that I can see what you made!

  4. I made this quilt years ago and even added to it to make it larger. I used the same fabrics you did because they went beautifully with my bedroom. Every summer this one gets on my bed. I still love it! Thanks so much for this beautiful pattern!

  8. This looks like a great pattern - I'm excited to make it. One question ... for the lap quilt, I'm a bit confused as to how many jelly roll strips are needed. The pattern says 72pcs (26 pairs) ... except that 26 pairs would be 52 individual strips ... or is it 36 pairs with 72 individual strips? Thanks for clarifying for me.

    1. Oh whoops, you are right! You need 36 pairs. Sorry about that typo. It can be made with 2 jelly rolls.
