My Hazel Quilt

Have you ever bought a fabric collection and then been afraid to use it for years and years but then one day you find the exact right pattern and all of a sudden you can't wait to cut into it? That happened with this quilt - I have had this Juliana Horner fabric in my collection for about 7 years and I HAD to use it for the Hazel Quilt.

To make my cover version of the Hazel Quilt, I decided to finally cut into some Juliana Horner fabrics that I bought several years ago. These were actually available in the quilting fabric section at Joann's and they are so beautiful and unique (I'm not positive but I think the collection was called Rosette). 

When they were available, I would pick up more from this collection every time I was in the store - I am so glad that I did because even though I have used some of the fabric here and there, I had enough to make this quilt.

My thought behind the fabric selection here was that to me, Hazel is a name that is kind of vintage but also kind of contemporary. It seems a little old-fashioned, but I have several friends with kids name Hazel and it seems fresh and fun on them. This collection is that same vintage/contemporary hybrid.

I also really liked that I had enough of the dark brown lattice print to use for the flying geese - I BARELY had enough. Two of the flying geese used in the quilt had to be pieced together from a small strip of fabric. But I made it work!

My favorite prints in this collection are the peach and mint floral - they are gorgeous. There weren't quite enough prints in the collection to make the quilt, so I ended up pulling two prints from another of Juliana's collections (the orange and mustard dot prints). They fit in nicely.

I actually had two options for backing fabrics from the collection (can you say hoarder?) - the darker green roses and the light pink print - and decided to go with the light pink. 

This was actually the second version of this pattern I made and I love the other one just as much - it was hard to pick which one to use for the cover! I will share more about the other quilt next week.
