The Melody Quilt — Mockups

In the past when I have posts mockups, I usually check out a fabric shop online and look at their bestsellers or new releases to see which fabric collections I want to use. For the past couple of patterns, I have asked for your suggestions on Instagram and it has made this all so much more fun to me. So here are your requests mocked up in the Melody Quilt Pattern.

I did a mockup for every request except one collection that I couldn't find and one that I couldn't find digital fabric files for. There were collections here that I wasn't familiar with and it was so fun to get to work a variety of styles. I tried mixing up the background fabrics so they aren't all just plain old white. Each of these mockups would use fat quarters of the collection.

Quilt Ideas - Christmastime

It is now December and we are in full Christmas-mode over here. All of the Christmas music, all of the sweet treats, and now all of the fabric. These mockups use a collection called Christmastime by Tim Holtz. His collections are always such a fun mix of scale, color, value, and texture. They are eclectic but still cohesive so working with them is more like working with scraps or a custom bundle than a fabric collection. 

I threw in some old favorite patterns for these mockups because even though they are old, they are still favorites. Plus there are a couple of newer patterns in here.

The Kara Quilt Pattern — Mockups

I have some quilt mockups for you today using the Kara Quilt pattern. This was one was pretty easy to mockup because it works well with lots of different types of collections, so I tried to be a little more creative with the background fabrics. You guys know I love a boring old white background!

Quilt Ideas - Tula Pink Solids

When I was contemplating fabric collections for a Quilt Ideas post, I kept going back to solids. I decided to make some mockups using the Tula Pink solids because (1) I have used them several times (see here, here, and here) and they are soft and vibrant and wonderful and (2) they are so nicely curated that they are like a fabric collection on their own.

In fact, I enjoyed this so much that I got a little carried away and made a bunch. Plus I had previously used them for mockups when releasing new quilt patterns so I'm going to include those as well.

Quilt Ideas — Urban Homestead Gatherings

A few weeks ago when I released the Jonah Quilt Pattern, several people commented that they were excited to see a pattern that was easily made a little more masculine. Me too! I don't think a quilt for a girl needs to be feminine or a quilt for a boy needs to be masculine — it really doesn't matter — but I do think that it is a little trickier to find patterns that lean more masculine if that is what you are looking for.

Then I started to think that which of my other patterns would lend themselves well to this type of project. I saw a new woven collection from Primitive Gatherings called Urban Homestead Gatherings. I happen to really love gray and brown, they are two of my favorite colors, even though I mostly sew with bright colors and this collection does gray and brown really well so I put together some quilt ideas.

Just for Fun Mockups Part 2

We have been getting back into the schedule of school (and all of the accompanying activities) at our house this week which has been just a tiny bit stressful (my house is chaos) so working on this mockups has been a great stress reliever. 

Hopefully I didn't miss any of the requests. There were a lot of Carly Quilt pattern requests so I saved them all for today.

Mockups - Just for Fun!

 A few weeks ago, I asked for mockup request on Instagram and I finally found some time to make them happen. This is about half of them, so hopefully I can get the rest of them ready to go later this week.

Also, a reminder! The Luna Quiltalong starts next week. I am currently working on a list of shops that are going to have kits available for the pattern so if you haven't picked your fabric yet, I am going to make sure you are taken care of.

Now back to the quilts. These were a lot of fun to put together — some of the requests were specific collections mocked up in specific patterns and some were just wanting to see a fabric collection mocked up in any pattern. Of course there are always lots of ways to do things and swapping out a background fabric or switching around the fabrics can make a project look completely different, but this will hopefully give you some ideas.

Quilt Ideas - Sweet 'n Spookier

When I saw that Art Gallery Fabrics had a new Spooky/Sweet line from this collection available, I thought "didn't I just make that Spooky 'n Sweeter quilt?" But alas, it was a year ago. The new collection is called Sweet 'n Spookier and it is just too cute. 

For fun, I mocked up the Judy Quilt since that was the quilt I made with the Spooky 'n Sweeter collection, and then I added in some other mockups.

The Ivy Quilt Pattern Mockups

My favorite day of a pattern release: here are some mockups using the Ivy Quilt Pattern. I have tried to give you a good range of options here, including a scrappy one, and now I want to make them all. This pattern is a little bit addicting!

I tried to stick with fabric collections that are currently available, but I snuck one in there that is only available for preorder — sorry about that! There is a pair of mockups that use the same fabrics with the dark/light fabric reversed so you can see what that looks like.

The Luna Quilt - Mockups

It's time for the mockups! I appreciate your excitement about this pattern — one of my main goals when writing patterns it write something that will help you fall even more in love with quilting and I think this is a great one for that, especially for beginners.

Of course I had fun making these mockups because it is one of my favorite things to do. I made quite a few this time and tried to give a range of different looks.

Quilt Ideas - Holly Jolly

I know it's not Christmas yet, it's not even Christmas in July yet, but I really like this collection and felt festive so here are some mockups using Holly Jolly by Urban Chiks.

The pink/red combo is my favorite part about this collection so I went a little heavy on the pink for some of these mockups. I am also including a mockup using my new pattern which will be available next week and which is super quick to make + jelly roll friendly!

Quilt Ideas - Florida 2

I have some fun mockups for you today! These are all using Florida 2 by Sarah Watts. A while back I shared my Freya Quilt pattern which uses the collection, but the fabric wasn't quite available yet - you know how that goes these days! 

This collection has some great purples and one of my current favorite color combinations (peach with a minty green). I have only been to Florida once (on a band trip in the 9th grade) and I live just about as far away from Florida as you can get and still be in the contiguous 50 states, but I just adore this collection.

Quilt Ideas - Ombre Galaxy Metallic

Last week when I was putting together mockups using the Elena Quilt pattern, I really loved working with V and Co.'s Ombre Galaxy Metallic prints so I thought they deserved their own post.

I have enjoyed Vanessa's ombre lines for a while (see here, here, and here) - there is a reason why they keep making them! I particularly like this collection because of the number of blue/green/purple options so I focused on those in a couple of the mockups.

The Elena Quilt Pattern Mockups

Today I get to share some mockups that I put together using the Elena Quilt Pattern. You guys know this is my favorite and I may have gone a little bit overboard with the number of mockups this time. It was too fun!

I've tried to get a good mix of styles and options here. Let me warn you before you scroll down: I even did a mockup with a black background fabric. I know, shocking. There are a couple of collections here that aren't quite available yet but I couldn't help myself and included them anyway.

A few notes about fabric selection with your pattern that you might find helpful:

• One really fun option is to use two different shades or values of a color for each block. For example, a block with a light green and dark green, one with a light pink and dark pink, etc. I did that in several of the mockups because it worked so nicely. This would be a good option for solids or basics or collections like Bee Plaid below where there are various prints in similar colors.
• Make sure that your cornerstone fabric stands out. I think that makes a big difference in the design!
• Larger scale prints can get a little lost in these blocks. You certainly can use them, but make sure you pair them with a smaller scale print or solid so that you don't lose the shape of the block.
• Spread that the darker/light value fabrics evenly over the quilt.

I hope you find that helpful - I'm more of a visual person so these mockups might be even more helpful for you.

Quilt Ideas - All is Well

All is Well is such a sweet collection - I love the soft, muted colors and the florals. While I normally favor bold, more saturated colors, I am finding myself more drawn to softer collections lately. It was fun to play around with them in some quilts.

I tried to do a mix of older/new and more traditional/more modern patterns for this collection. My favorite prints in the collection is probably the plaid and it is available as a flannel print. What a great quilt backing!

The Hannah Quilt Pattern - Mockups

I had some fun putting these mockups together for the Hannah Quilt Pattern. Depending on the background fabric that you use for your quilt, the pattern can take on a more traditional or a more modern tone. Notice the Rifle Paper Co. collection here looks pretty traditional and the Sugar prints look very modern. I love that!

You guys know I love a plain old boring white/light gray background fabric but I'm trying to be a little more adventurous for you so there is a pink one in here. Each of these quilts are mocked up in lap size (since that's my favorite - and many of your favorites too) which uses exactly 1 standard Jelly Roll.

Quilt Ideas - Starry

You might have noticed (since I have used it several times in mockups of the past few months and once in an actual quilt) that I am a huge fan of Starry by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society. 

I love it so much that I thought it deserved its own Quilt Ideas post. I am going to repost some of the older mockups for you here, but I also have a few new ones so this post is going to be extra long.

Quilt Ideas - Little Women

Recently, I have seen a few posts about a new collection by Riley Blake called Little Women. I LOVE Little Women - the book, the movie, everything. It was the first "long" book that I read as a kid and Christian Bale as Laurie in the 90s Little Women movie was 😍 

So I kind of HAD to do a Quilt Ideas post with the collection. If you want to see an actual quilt made with one my patterns using Little Women, Riley Blake did super cute version of the Ruth Quilt over on their blog. 

While I normally play it pretty safe with background fabrics and just use white/off white/light gray, I tried to be a little, tiny bit more adventurous with a couple of these mockups. It's such a sweet collection!

Quilt Ideas - Midnight in the Garden

 It has been a little bit since I did a Quilt Ideas post and I have missed it! Today I am going to share some mockups using Midnight in the Garden by Sweetfire Road for Moda, which is a brand new collection that is somewhere between traditional and modern with lots of pretty florals.

I really like the pinks/mustard/yellow combination used in the collection - especially in combination with those dark colors. It really makes the colors pop and I even used a dark gray as the background color for one of my mockups (I know - shocking!).
