The Sylvie Quilt - Baby Version

A while ago I realized that it had been ages since I had made a baby quilt which is crazy because they are my favorite thing to make! Now that I am not as young as I once was, most of my friends are done having kids and I just don't have any babies around.

But then I remembered that I can make whatever I want and I want to make more baby quilts. Conveniently enough, my cousin and his wife are having a baby boy so I decided they needed a baby version of the Sylvie Quilt.

Overcast Baby Quilt

Let me introduce you to the Overcast Baby Quilt! I was originally going to call this post "Cloudy Day Baby Quilt," but then I remembered that I already had a post with that name. Oops!

A few weeks ago I received an email invitation for a virtual baby shower. My very best friend from high school, Cynthia, is having her first baby; she lives in Pennsylvania and has lived all over the world and the US and wanted all of her friends to be able to attend via Skype.

Super Sweet Baby Quilt (with brief tutorial)

A few weeks ago, my son's 3rd grade teacher announced that she was going to be adopting a baby girl very soon. We are so excited for her! She has been wonderful for dealing with my (somewhat challenging) 8 year old son and I wanted to do something nice for her.

First (of course) I wanted to make her a quilt. I had a stack of scraps of Rifle Paper Co fat quarters from these two quilts (here and here) and decided to use a few prints from each of them plus a few prints from my stash.

I-Spy Olivia Quilt

When I originally started working on my Olivia Quilt Pattern, I knew that I wanted to make an I-spy version.

My stash of fussy cut-able prints really took a hit when I made my Fussy Cut Sampler quilt last year so finding prints that were the right colors took some work, but I am so happy with how this colorful, fun little quilt turned out.

Imagined Landscapes Triangle Peaks Quilt

I bought this Triangle Peaks pattern from Emily over at Quilty Love a while back and having been wanting to give it a go - I am a sucker for triangle quilts (see here and here).

While one of the things I enjoy the very most about quilting is coming up with my own patterns, sometimes it is fun to sew someone else's too. It is so important that quilters support each other.

Zuma Modern Postage Stamp Quilt

When I first saw the Zuma fabrics that came in the October Culcita Box, my first thought was how great the white/hot pink print would be as sashing fabric.

And it is pretty epic. I decided to use my Modern Postage Stamp Pattern because it is quick and easy and would let the fabrics shine, while also showcasing the sashing print.

The Mary Quilt - Baby Version

A while back when I introduced my Mary Quilt Pattern, I started a baby size version just for fun. It took me a while because I decided to hand quilt it (and I am slow!) but I finally finished it up.

I used some favorite Cotton + Steel prints mixed with some solids for a gender neutral baby quilt with some spunk.

A while back (wow, almost exactly 3 years ago!) I wrote a tutorial for a super simple, beginner friendly quilt that I made using Jeni Baker's Curiosities collection.

Recently I have been thinking that I would like to make a new version of the quilt and rewrite the tutorial to use fat quarters. Mister Domestic's Loved to Pieces fabrics that came in the July Culcita Box were perfect!

I figured that while I was at it, I would expand the sizing as well so the new version of the tutorial also includes instructions for a lap size version.

Transparency Baby Quilt

A few weeks back, I went to a baby shower for a friend's new baby boy and thought it was a good excuse to make a quick baby quilt.

Gleaned Baby Quilt

I had a bit of a mental battle on what to do with the Gleaned fabrics that were in the February Culcita Box so I went with the quilter's version of Occam's razer: the simpler option is always better.

While large, complicated projects can be their own kind of fun, there is something so nice about sewing something simple (this is something I have been thinking about a lot lately and, hint hint, there are some simple, quick, beginner-friendly patterns coming in the near future).

City Grid Quilt

I recently volunteered to test a pattern for Meghan over at Then Came June. Even though I have been really busy lately, I love testing patterns and it looked like a fun step outside of my comfort zone.

Gender Neutral Starry Baby Quilt

One of my cousins is expecting a baby next month is waiting to find out whether she is having a boy or a girl. She wasn't using any particular colors for her nursery and so I didn't have a lot of direction.

I have A LOT of cousins so I have been making a quilt for each of them when they have their first babies. Several of the quilts were made before I started this blog, but you can see the others here, here, here, here, and here.

Firetruck Quilt Tutorial

Since a few people asked, I put together a little tutorial on making the Firetruck Quilt that I made for my son.  This quilt is very beginner friendly since it is just made using squares.

This is a great quilt for scraps.  In fact, the more variety you have in your prints, the better.  My quilt ended up 50" x 60" and is made up of 2.5" squares (2" finished).  If you wanted to make the quilt smaller, you could use smaller squares, and if you wanted to make the quilt bigger you could use bigger squares.  Cutting the squares 2" (1.5" finished) would give you a 37.5" x 45" quilt and cutting the squares 3" (2.5" finished) would give you a 62.5" x 75" quilt.  

In order to keep track of everything when piecing together this many little squares, I like to break them down into blocks. 

And this is how I pieced each of the blocks.  While I guess you could strip piece the squares, it would affect the random feeling of the fabrics so I wouldn't recommend it for this particular quilt.

Super Simple Curiosities Quilt (with tutorial and a tip about basting with voile)

Have you seen Jeni Baker's new collection, Curiosities?  It is adorable and so when Art Gallery asked me to make a little something with it, I was pretty excited.  

I knew that I wanted to make a quilt that would really show off the fabrics so I thought it was a great opportunity to put together a tutorial for a beginner quilt.  And of course this quilt isn't just for beginners, it is also a great quick project.

Sewing with Curves Projects

I have recently started taking the Curves Class from Rachel at Stitched in Color. I was able to pretty much complete all of the projects (I couldn't find a snap for my baby bib).  The first project was a curved bunting. I used a variety of boy-ish prints to hang it in my son's room - a couple of them are from Sarah Jane's Children at Play Line which is wonderful. Sewing with curves isn't so bad ;)
